Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about filing Form N-400, our service, and how we protect your information.

About FormSnake

What is FormSnake?
FormSnake is form-preparation software that helps you complete U.S. government forms accurately. We are not a law firm and do not provide legal advice. See our about page to learn more.
Is FormSnake affiliated with USCIS?
No. FormSnake is an independent service. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to USCIS or any government agency. You file your forms directly with USCIS yourself.
How is FormSnake different from other services?
Most services give you a filled-in form and leave you to figure out the rest. FormSnake generates a complete filing package — forms, cover letter, checklist, payment authorization, and personalized mailing instructions — all in a single PDF.
What if I find an error after generating my package?
Contact us at support@formsnake.com before mailing your application. We will correct the error and regenerate your package at no additional cost.

N-400 Application

Do I need a lawyer to file Form N-400?
No. USCIS does not require an attorney to file Form N-400, and many applicants self-file successfully. If you have a complex immigration history — such as criminal records, extended absences, or prior removal proceedings — you may benefit from consulting a licensed immigration attorney.
Am I eligible to file N-400?
Most applicants must be at least 18, hold a Green Card for 5 years (3 years if married to a U.S. citizen), and meet continuous residency and physical presence requirements. Check the full eligibility criteria on uscis.gov before filing.
How long does N-400 processing take?
Processing times vary by field office, typically ranging from several months to over a year. After filing you will receive a receipt notice, then a biometrics appointment, then an interview. Check current times at egov.uscis.gov/processing-times.
Can I file N-400 before 5 years?
Yes. You may file up to 90 days before meeting the continuous residency requirement. For example, if your 5-year date is October 1, you can file as early as July 3.

Filing & Payment

How much is the N-400 filing fee?
The USCIS filing fee for paper-filed N-400 is $760 for all applicants. Fee waivers are available for applicants with household income at or below 150% of the federal poverty guidelines.
What payment methods does USCIS accept?
USCIS accepts credit/debit card (Form G-1450), ACH bank transfer (Form G-1650), or personal check/money order (Form G-1651). FormSnake auto-selects and pre-fills the correct payment form based on your choice. Learn more on our N-400 package page.
Where do I mail my N-400?
You mail it to a USCIS lockbox facility. The correct address depends on your state of residence and whether you are filing with a fee waiver. FormSnake automatically resolves the right address and includes it in your personalized filing instructions.
What documents do I need to include?
At minimum: a photocopy of your Green Card (front and back), your USCIS payment form, and two passport-style photos if you reside overseas. Additional supporting documents vary by situation — your FormSnake filing checklist lists exactly what to include.

Security & Privacy

Is my data safe?
Yes. Sensitive fields are encrypted with AES-256-GCM before storage. Payments are processed by Stripe (PCI Level 1 compliant) — we never see your card number. Your data is never shared with third parties. Read our privacy policy for full details.
What happens to my data after I generate my package?
Your data is retained so you can regenerate your package if needed. You may request deletion at any time by contacting support@formsnake.com. See our privacy policy for our full retention and deletion policy.
